The Ethiopian Evangelical Church Mekane Yesus Horo Guduru Synod was established, becoming the 29th Unit of the Church. The celebration of Synod formation started on the 25th of May in procession where more than 400 choir members marched in the town of Fincha’a singing and praising God for His great deeds.
The founding Convention of the Synod commenced with Holly Communion where thousands attended at the new Synod compound.
Rev. Yonas Yigezu (President of the EECMY), Rev. Dr. Berhanu Ofgaa (General Secretary of the EECMY), Rev. Dr. Wakseyoum Idossa (Former President of the EECMY) and leaders of the Management Committee of the Church were present at the establishing convention.
Having confirmed unanimous adopting of Synod’s Constitution as approved by the 20th General Assembly, Rev. Yonas Yigezu, President of the EECMY officially declared founding of the EECMY Horo Guduru Synod as of May 27th at 2:10 pm.
The Convention then elected Rev. Mesfin Mekonin as the first president of the Synod and Rev. Endale Belay and Mr. Hindibu Bulti as vice president and treasurer respectively to lead the new Synod for the coming four years.
Rev. Mesfin has earned BTh from Mekane Yesus Seminary and has MA in Public Administration. He was a Parish leader and was responsible for organizing the process of Synod formation.
Rev. Endale has a BTh from Mekane Yesus seminary and is Parish leader. Mr. Hindibu has BA in accounting and works for Awash Bank as Fincha’a branch Manager.
The Synod had different fund raising activities which enabled them collect a substantial amount of money. Some youth solo singers of the Synod prepared a VCD and gave 1000 copy as a gift to the Synod.
Horo Guduru Synod has built its own offices with seven rooms and meeting hall that can accommodate 600 people.
The Horo Guduru Synod Grew out of Central Synod.
Saturday June 17, 2017 the Ethiopian Evangelical Church Mekane Yesus Seminary celebrated Graduation of students from three departments: School of Theology, the School of Jazz Music and the Media and Management and Leadership College.
From School of Theology, 30 students received Masters of Theology, 15 received Bachelor of Theology in regular, 86 in BTH distance, 14 BHT summer, 116 distance diploma.
The Mekane Yesus Management and Leadership College also graduated 18 students in Masters of Organizational Leadership, 18 in BA of Leadership and Development Studies and total of 34 students in evening and distance education of same fields. There were also 29 BA graduates in Gender Studies, 67 BA graduates in Accounting and Finance and total of 99 students in evening and distance classes. Additionally 83 students finished BA in Management Regular and evening and 27 women students graduated in WIAC.
From school of Jazz and Music 26 finished in advanced diploma in music and 27 BA graduates in Music and media . The total graduates of the Mekane Yesus Seminary this year was 732.
Mekane Yesus Seminary President, Dr. Bruk Ayele on his congratulatory message encouraged the graduating students to remain in Christ as they begin a new chapter in their lives, looking forward to the various ministries they have been called to by the Lord of the harvest. “ As you go out to build and sustain families, churches, institutions, communities and nations what you build can only stand firm if it is built on the truth foundation-therefore remain in Christ” Dr. Bruk added.
Rev. Yonas Yigezu, President of the Ethiopian Evangelical Church Mekane Yesus delivered his charge to the graduates. “God is going to use you in amazingly fruitful way. All the desires from you is faithfulness; so be faithful to Him as He always is faithful unto you” President tells the class of 2017. “ know your context in this globalized and postmodern culture, be prepared to serve in diligence and competence, and most of all never shy away from preaching the message of the cross” he advise the graduates.
“Now therefore, the Ethiopian Evangelical Church Mekane Yesus sends you into the vineyard of the Lord; go forth with courage and faith; fight the good fight; run the good race and finish it well. Be faithful in season and out season” President Yonas concluded.
It was a party atmosphere at the seminary with family and friends who were waiting for the graduates dressed in graduation robes.
On Sunday May 22nd the Ethiopian Evangelical Church Mekane Yesus Abay Dabus Synod Convention commenced with Holy Communion at Mendi town.
Rev. Yonas Yigezu, President of the Church shared from Nahum 1:7 “The Lord is good, a strong hold in the day of trouble; and he knoweth them that trust in him” which was the theme of the Convention.
After Reports on the general and financial activities of the Synod were presented by the executive secretary and treasurer of the Synod, it was discussed thoroughly by the convention.
Subsequently the Convention re-elected Rev. Melaku Tefera as President for the next four years. Rev. Melaku has a BTH from Mekane Yesus Seminary. Rev. Fekadu Mereba and Rev. Melkamu Riqitu were also elected as Vice President and Treasurer respectively. Rev. Fekadu has a BTH from Mekane Yesus Seminary and is a lecturer at Mendi Theological College. Rev. Melkamu also has a BTH from Mekane Yesus Seminary and is serving as Parish leader.
Currently the Synod is showing good growth especially in mission work. It has expanded its territory and has established three Berta speaking congregations in Benishangul Gumuz Region. According to the 2016 statistics report of the Church the Synod has 150 congregations which are ministered by 48 Pastors and 38 Evangelists. Total members of the Synod are 154,672 out of which 68,330 are communicant.
The convention had balanced number of participants from women, men and youth which was a good indicator that the Synod has given equal voice for youth and Women for decision making.

The Ethiopian Evangelical Church Mekane Yesus Pension, Insurance and Investment Commission inaugurated seven story building at Mekane Yesus Mekanisa compound on June 1, 2017.
The commission has been investing in different financial sectors for years and recently started diversifying its investment which real estate is one of them.
This multipurpose building was built with 20 million birr and at the moment all rooms are rented out for different business purposes and started generating income. The 4th floor of this building is occupied by the commission for office use. Additionally, there are two major projects that are underway.
These are eight story building in bole sub city with 65 million birr budget and a seven story multi- purpose building with 85 million birr budget in Hawassa town. “This inaugurated building was started later than the two projects but since it was a smaller project, it was completed first” said Rev. Abraham Mengesha, Chair person of Pension, Investment and Insurance board and President of Central Ethiopia Synod.
The Mekanisa project foundation stone was laid in April 24, 2014 and the project took less than three years for completion.
Pension, insurance and Investment Scheme was established in 1972 with a responsibility of securing pension benefit to the permanent Church employees and their legal heirs. The commission sees to it that life and accident insurance is being effected for the permanent and contract employees of the Church. The contributions come from the employer as well as the employee which the Church gives 24 hours insurance for her employees.
The Board of Pension Insurance and Investment Commission, which was started only as a pension and social security scheme to the employees of the Church has now grown and added employees’ group accident and life Insurance scheme, vehicle insurance scheme, and property Insurance scheme.
All this investments are insuring the sustainability of pension benefit payment for the retired permanent employees of the church.
“I am very happy for what God has accomplished in me and for the trust the PIIC Board put in me” said Mr. Gumachew Kussie, Commissioner of Pension, Insurance and Investment of the Church expressing his feeling about the completion of the building.
Rev. Yonas Yigezu President of the Church blessed the building so that it can be for the Glory of God and the benefit of all people.
It is a great pleasure to see that people who served God and the society during their young age are now been taken care of by the Church this way.
The Ethiopian Evangelical Church Mekane Yesus Birbir Dilla Synod Convention was held from May 19-20th, 2017 at Aira town.
The convention gathered under the theme “being fruitful”. Rev. Yonas Yigezu, President of the Ethiopian Evangelical Church Mekane Yesus shared the Word of God on this theme. He explained how the Church can be fruitful and that faith in Jesus and the Work of the Holy Spirit is the soil on which fruitfulness is grounded.
Reports on the general activities and financial activities of the Synod were presented by the executive secretary and treasurer of the Synod which was discussed thoroughly by the convention. The Synod audit report showed that the Synod is free from any qualification points which were appreciated by the Convention.
Prior to the convention the Synod had extra ordinary council meeting for two days which screened the nominees for the leadership of the Synod
The convention then elected Rev. Melkamu Itefa replacing Rev. Itefa Geleta who has served for two terms (8 years). Rev. Melkamu, 49, has a BTH from Mekane Yesus Seminary. He has served as Parish coordinator for four years and was elected as executive secretary at the Synod.
He then joined MYS for MA in Theology which he completed two years ago. He was serving at Aster Gano Literature Society as the coordinator until the date of election as President.
The Synod also elected Rev. Tariku Negeri as Vice President and Rev. Mulatu Gadisa as Treasurer. Rev. Tariku has a BTH from MYS and is serving as Coordinator for Children and Youth Ministry of the Synod.
Rev. Mulatu has BTH from MYS and MA from Norway. He was the first president of the Synod and is currently serving at Onasimos Nesib Seminary as Instructor.
The convention passed major resolutions. Joint evangelism with other Synods to unreached areas, celebrate Synod’s annual mission day during coffee harvest season as a means of fund-raising for mission work and additionally for EECMY TV Broadcasting, on top of what the Church Council have decided for the contribution of 1000 Birr for each EECMY congregation, the Convention decided that urban congregations of the Synod to pay 5 to 10 thousand Birr and have a fund raining strategy to support the launching of the TV program.
Birbir Dilla Synod has major contribution to the society through its development and social services which is part of the wholistic mission of the Church. Ayra Hospital, six health centers, two high schools (Lalo Ayera and Horst Springs secondary and preparatory schools), Cheliya hand craft training project, Birbir Suchi food security project which works on soil conservation and forest development are just some parts of the Synod activities.
Currently Birbir Dilla Synod has 239 congregations and 8 preaching Places. The total members of the Synod are 280,617 which out of this 145,895 are communicant. There are 122 pastors, 11 evangelists and 4283 volunteers.
