serving the whole person

Mekane Yesus - Joint Language School

MY-Joint Language School is situated at Ayer Tena – in the southwestern part of Addis Ababa. It is owned by the Ethiopian Evangelical Church Mekane Yesus, with eight partnering mission organizations on the board running the school.

Students of MY-JLS come from all over the world and from different mission and development agencies. They are involved in various kinds of development and church work throughout the country. In addition, others who want to learn a particular Ethiopian language attend the school.

The Growing Participator Approach

The school uses the Growing Participator Approach, which has been found to be effective, thorough and fun! This approach, developed by Dr. Greg Thomson, is a six phase program that emphasizes the socio-cultural nature of language learning, helping the learners to build relationships with people from the host world. Such a person, a Nurturer, will help the language learner, or the Growing Participator (GP) to grow into their community and into their new world.

At the Joint Language School one can learn the first four phases. The last two phases will be learnt by the individual, using the techniques he/she has learned during the program.

The school is currently offering courses in four languages, the most common ones being Amharic and Oromo.

 Schedule

Regular courses are offered in the fall and spring semesters. During the summer the school runs an eight week Summer Course. Language learners can choose between a Normal Track of 4 periods (of 45 minutes) per day or Fast track of 6 periods per day. There is also Normal Plus, of 4 periods plus additional hours according to the individual needs.

The daily schedule is from 8.30 - 12.00 (4 periods) for the Normal track, and an additional two hours in the afternoon for the Fast track.

A Special Track is also offered, primarily for parents with small children. This track has only 2 periods per day, Monday-Friday and the time can be arranged according to student’s needs and the capacity of the school.

Tailor Made courses are offered according to the need of the students. Evening Classes are offered for 3-7 students in 6 or 3 weeks blocks (see school fees).

The Six Phases

Phase 1: Here-and-Now (100 hours)

In the first 100 hours with the Nurturer the Growing Participators will:

  • Listen to instructions and questions
  • Respond first non-verbally, and later verbally
  • Learn to understand about a 750-word vocabulary through the use of toys and pictures
  • Learn to understand simple grammar structures by using them in everyday language
  • The GPs will start with reading and writing towards the end of the phase.

Duration:   Normal Track ~ 5 weeks *

                Fast Track ~ 3.5 weeks

Phase 2: Story building (150 hours)

Growing Participators begin to speak more freely using story building activities:

  • GPs speak using wordless stories, busy pictures and cartoon strips.
  • Host nurturers guide story telling using colloquial language
  • Both build their own simple life stories through drawing activities.
  • GPs extend their reading and writing activities.

Duration:  Normal Track ~ 7.5 weeks

               Fast Track ~ 5 weeks

Phase 3: Shared stories (250 hours)

Growing Participators develop more conversational ability through listening to and discussing:

  • Descriptions of familiar daily activities
  • Familiar stories
  • Host stories
  • Reminiscences of shared field experiences

This will also strengthen their already developed reading and writing abilities from the end of phase 1.

Duration:  Normal Track ~ 12.5 weeks

               Fast Track ~ 8.5 weeks

Phase 4: Deep Life Sharing (500 hours)

Relationships begin to deepen through discussions using ethnographic questions about:

  • Every day life and culture
  • Life histories, backgrounds, and experiences
  • Reminiscences of shared field experiences.

Ethnographic topics will also be dealt with in more advanced reading and writing activities.

Duration:  Normal Track ~ 25 weeks

               Fast Track ~ 17 weeks

Phase 5: Native -to-Native Discourse (500 hours)

Through discussions, reading and writing, the GPs learn about a wide range of commonly discussed areas of life and are able to participate in those discussions credibly. This comes through dealing with:

  • Literature
  • Movies
  • Radio talks shows etc.
  • Future work-related topics.

Phase 6: Self-sustaining growth

By continuing to participate highly in host life and understanding of most of what they hear the GPs' familiarity with the language and culture will continue to grow steadily.

* Learners who want a refresher course or have some basic knowledge of the language from before will be assessed to see which phase they will fit in to. The above estimated duration for each phase may therefore vary.

Recording device

Students will be recording new vocabulary, stories, interviews etc. throughout their time at the language school. They will therefore need an audio recording device from day one. There are several options, but since the recordings will grow from day to day, it is preferable to be able to save these on a computer. A recording device with a USB-port, such as digital minidisk recorders, Dictaphones, MP3 recorders, laptops etc are all good. A normal tape-recorder also works well, even though finding what the students want in their listening library will be more difficult than finding it from a file on a computer. The students' main homework in the beginning phases will be to listen to the recordings.

Some students also use a video camera or digital camera to record some of the activities in class, but this is not mandatory.

Orientation

We give an introduction to the approach before the students start class, and it is also possible to stop by our office and get more information.
