Church Economy Development has been one of the top agendas of the Church over the past few years. The urgency of the matter is grounded in the ever increasing demand of budget to finance the "Holistic Ministry" of the Church at large. The decline of block grant that comes from partners to support the work of the Church has exacerbated the shortage of budget and this compelled the church to devise a means that shall help her to be financially self supportive. It was in this perspective that "Aspiring to see Economically Self Reliant Church" was coined in the three pillar vision of the church. This vision gave birth to the establishment of Stewardship and Church Economy Development Department (SCEDD) in 2012 to coordinate all efforts of the Church in the realization of the vision. This Office was mandated to coordinate the implementation of wide range of self reliant strategies, including the local collection in the tithe approach, the management of jointly managed resources (JMR), and Financial Capacity Building efforts. 

From the outset it was assumed that it could continue as one of the divisions under Finance and Administration. However, as the work was larger than expected upgrading the church economy office to department level was found crucial because of the huge responsibilities entrusted to it. Based on this understanding, the EECMY Board of Finance and Trustees (BFT) after deliberating on this matter for long time presented its proposal to the 7th Council of the Church in 2011 to organize the division at department level. The Council endorsed the proposal and assigned the executive Board of the Church to implement the establishment of the Department for Church Economy Development.

The Department at present has the following centres under its responsibility:- 

  1. GudinaTumsa Holistic Training Centre having over 40 employees, hosting different workshops, training facilities, and rentable halls meant for churches and church based organizations
  2. MekaneYesus Workshop(garage) having over 45 employees, and provide auto vehicle maintenance services to churches and church based organizations
  3. Entoto Guest House having 10 employees, and accommodate guests from all over the world, but for those having work relations with the EECMY
  4. Gulele Guest House having 11 employees, that accommodate guests from all over the world, those having work relations with the church
  5. Amist Kilo G+5 building occupied by different business activities and church works
  6. Saris Compound having 8 employees with rentable warehouses and offices used by different organizations and individuals
  7. Kasanchis EECMY compound rented out to one of the international schools
  8. Hawassa EECMY guest house rented to an individual-use right not settled
  9. Bishoftu Evangelical College is under full renovation and modification, to be used for educational and retreat centre
